When You Go On Holiday For those pet owners who have never used a kennels or cattery before we would like to offer the following general advice. Make sure that the premises hold a current licence, this ensures that the premises have been professionally inspected annually and meet an acceptable environmental health standard. However, we all have our own standards so it is advisable to check two or three establishments for your own peace of mind. Be wary of establishments who do not welcome open inspections at relatively short notice. If you think your pet may have health problems while you are away, please make us aware so that we may agree a course of action. Bear in mind that all kennels and catteries get fully booked during the peak holiday period so it is advisable to book as early as possible. At the same time check that your pets vaccination certificate will still be in date, to avoid last minute panics. Dog owners are also advised to check if the intra-nasal kennel cough vaccine is a compulsory requirement. You may find that some kennels prefer this to be given at least three weeks before the holiday. Although this vaccine does not offer 100% protection ( there are many causes of kennel cough) it is a sensible precaution, especially when there are local outbreaks of the disease. |
