Dentistry Dental problems in cats and dogs are unfortunately all too common and are usually as a result of gum disease, when the plaque and subsequent tartar are allowed to build up on your pets teeth. Tartar is the brown hard substance, resembling lime scale, which is firmly attached to the teeth. Tartar must be removed under anaesthetic using an ultra-sonic tooth scaler, and the teeth then polished. This is important as the tartar causes gum disease, bad breath and can release bacteria into the blood stream; resulting in heart, liver and kidney failure. Once the teeth are clean (or in a young animal) the emphasis is on preventative oral hygiene, including tooth brushing with special pastes. For those animals that will not tolerate this there are alternatives, such as oral gels, special dry food which helps to keep the teeth clean. Please ask one of the staff. |
