FAQ'S: Q: Why is there such a difference in price between different vet surgeries? A: All vets practicing in the UK are registered as Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, having had a recognised standard of Veterinary education. This does not mean that the level of care and expertise will be the same at each clinic , however. Medicine and surgery is advancing at an ever increasing pace, and what was excellent care 2 years ago, may no longer be the best in view of new research and discoveries. It takes a huge amount of effort and constant investment in new equipment and staff education to keep providing quality care. It is also expensive to employ qualified Veterinary Nurses, but crucial when aiming to give an excellent standard of pet care. This is why there is a difference in cost for the care that is provided by different practices. We have found that the strength of the bond between the owner and pet will usually determine the level of care demanded. This is why we promote pet insurance so that the care provided need not be compromised by cost. Q: OK, but what about the price of simple procedures such as boosters? A: The annual health check that accompanies the booster is one of the most important events in determining your pet's long term health. So the knowledge, expertise and experience of the vet, as well as the quality and range of the facilities at the practice, is significant when diagnosing and treating problems in their early stages. Remember that a year for us is between 7 & 10 years for your pet....The vaccination itself makes up only a part of your annual visit, and in the older pet, is much less important than the health check. Q: Vets in pet stores advertise cheap vaccinations and consultations. How are they able to do this? A: Surveys have shown that when people 'ring round' to get an idea of vets prices, they mostly ask about Vaccinations, boosters, spays and castrates. So some vets 'loss lead' these items, and load the cost onto drug prices, injection fees, dispensing fees and procedures. Often the overall prices for work done are the same as or higher than vets who price things in an 'upfront' manner....The aim of loss leading vaccines and offering lots of "free" services, is to get pets into the store, where procedures can be booked to generate the lost income.
